The Fairfax Trails Awareness Project is designed to raise community awareness of the large number of trails that run throughout Fairfax. Connecting various neighborhoods, downtown, and open space, these trails run between streets, often making direct pedestrian routes possible, where the alternative is circuitous winding roads that take much longer.
Fairfax is very lucky to have these trails but unfortunately many have been neglected. Our current effort is to place signposts at key pedestrian trail junctions. These signposts (similar to those seen on hiking trails in Open Space lands) will indicate the name and destination of the trail.
Fairfax has identified over 100 of these trails so the marking project will take a while to carry out fully. If you are interested, there will be a number of work days dedicated to making and placing signposts, as well as marking them with color- coded reflectors (indicating trail status).

Fairfax Map Links*
A series of maps showing the Pedestrian Right of Ways, and their condition are available on this site. The links below will open a new tab or window with a large version of the desired map showing Flood Zones and Evacuation Routes too. The maps will extend outside your browser window, so simply use the scroll bars to locate your home and make a note of flood zones or emergency trails nearby.
Maps can be downloaded from each map page.
* The maps referenced above will be refined as we obtain more information. To get involved, or to submit feedback, contact us at fairfaxvolunteers@earthlink.net.
